Culture and the Environment
- Grouse "Chicken"

Long ago the parts of a grouse [also called "chickens"] had many different uses.

Feathers
- men wore feathers to impress women
- feathers were used to decorate clothing
- feathers were used to make ornaments
- feathers were used to make brooms and dusters

Tail
- used as a fan
- used as a duster
- used as a broom

Body
- sometimes the bag under neck was cleaned and blown up with air, food was left in bag and dried, to make a baby rattle
- sometimes food inside was removed, blown with air, used as a balloon
- feet were used for good-luck
- feet were sometimes used to make a toy [muscle was left attached and when muscle was pulled feet would spread out].
- everything was taken and used as food except for intestines. Grouse was eaten alone or with vegetables
- today grouse is still used as food
