Liz Burke was born at Fontas on April 5, 1953. Her parents were both from the Slavey Nation: Fred from Snake River and Madeline Needlay from Fontas. Liz was raised in a traditional home.
In 1962 she moved with her parents to the Fort Nelson Reserve. She was able to attend a local school for a couple of years but then was sent to Lower Post and Kamloops Residential Schools. After returning to Fort Nelson she started a family. Liz Burke and Ralph Tessier have three children, now grown. Today they enjoy helping to raise their grandsons.
Liz enjoys working with children and has worked as a Native Cultural Demonstrator at both the R.L. Angus and G.W. Carlson Schools. Learning the traditional Slavey ways Liz was provided with skills that she continues to share and practice through hands on demonstrations.
Recently Liz received her Teaching Assistant Certificate and now works as a Teacher Assistant and Personal Attendant to physically challenged students.
