Clothing - 1945

The photograph below was taken at Snake River in 1945. By this time moose hide clothing was no longer neccessary. People would sewed their own clothing or purchased them from the Old Hudson Bay or traders.

Notice in this picture the little girl and her mother are wearing leggings, mocassins a dress or skirt. Girl’s hair was always pulled back. A shawl or sheet was cleverly wrapped around the baby and around the mother’s chest and tied underneath the baby’s bottom. [click the image for a larger copy]

The little girl in the picture is Bella Michel. The baby is Thomas Michel, and the toddler is Joseph Michel.

Marrianne Michel [the mother] lived with her family at Snake River, the Old Fort and then moved to the 295 Reserve in 1961.
