Trees - Diamond Willow

 


Diamond Willow

o the young Diamond Willow is called Moose Willow (Pussy Willow)
o moose survive on young trees in the winter
o excellent fire wood
o used as a beaver snare
o bug smudge when drying meat
o easiest fire wood to get because of it's lightness
o crafts
o beaver stretchers
o spruce branches were wrapped around snares to prevent animals from eating them

Fungus
o grows on diamond willow ad is collected only in the woods, not close to town
o
burned in evening to keep "spirits" away from home
o considered sacred
o used for headache or tea
o used as a cleansing agent - called "good medicine"
o shaved and put into tea
o can be burned like incense
o smoke keeps mosquitoes away

o used as a rag to rub brains into hide when tanning
