Our School

General Information about R.L. Angus

The school serves the residential areas of the town of Fort Nelson and all outlying areas serviced by our busses. Fort Nelson is a community located in Northeast British Columbia, with a population of approximately 3500 residents. It is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream – a community with beautiful rivers, hikes, fishing, camping, as well as the facilities of a larger community, such as a beautiful recreation centre with many amenities.

At RL Angus, we focus attention and effort in the areas of literacy, numeracy, inquiry learning, science, and athletics. We have many learning opportunities for students, including a Symposium of Learning, Maker Days, and guided literacy support.  This year, with the support of our amazing full-time teacher-librarian, we have been able to offer school-wide programming in the Core Competencies. We offer the Enrichment Program for those students who may already be exceeding expectations, but would benefit from further enrichment of their educational programming.

Our school is well equipped with technology including Chromebook and iPad carts. This technology is used as both as assistive tools and for inquiry-based learning.  Inquiry-based instruction is a process of learning through a variety of sources in a personalized and flexible way. This is embedded in the classrooms as a way to build digital literacy and digital citizenship in students. Through this process we want to encourage our students to be risk takers, problem solvers, and innovators. A collaborative culture allows for teachers to have deep and meaningful conversations that focus on a growth mindset.

Our staff works hard to ensure the school is a positive and productive place. We are fortunate to have two full-time Indigenous Educational Assistants and two Youth and Family Workers to provide extra, targeted assistance to students needing academic and life skills support. All staff and students are equal shareholders in defining who we are as a school and we believe that a positive school culture has a direct impact on social responsibility and academic achievement.

R.L. Angus Elementary School is a safe learning space for all learners. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the principal.

School Curriculum

The Ministry of Education sets curriculum policy and defines what teachers are required to teach and students are expected to learn in each grade and subject. A consistent, province-wide curriculum is thereby ensured. However, teaching and assessment strategies are left to the professional judgment of teachers, enabling them to address individual student needs and deliver the curriculum in a context that is locally meaningful.
